NOWA WAŁOWA – AS THE START OF THE YOUNG CITY IN GDAŃSK

Design Office of Municipal Engineering (BPBK S.A.) has in recent years been working on a design for construction of a transport system on the former shipyard premises in Gdańsk. The scope included in the design covers amongst other Nowa Wałowa Street, which will become the main transport axis in the central part of the new district of Gdańsk, the Young City.
The first stage of the construction is the southern roadway of Nowa Wałowa Street from Nowomiejska Street to Rybaki Górne Street together with Nowomiejska Street to Jana z Kolna Street and Rybaki Górne Street to Wałowa Street with reconstruction of the tramway tracks at the entrance of Nowomiejska Street to Jana z Kolna Street, the so called “Small Loop”.
Next in turn is the construction of the southern roadway of Nowa Wałowa Street from its connection with the existing Brama Oliwska intersection to the intersection with Nowomiejska Street executed earlier, with an overpass over the Polish State Railway premises and flyover over Jana z Kolna Street.
The road system also takes account of the reconstruction of the whole infrastructure within Jana z Kolna Street. In the road strip of Nowa Wałowa on the section from Jana z Kolna Street to the target cut-through of Rybaki Górne Street there is an existing development of the former premises of the Gdańsk Shipyard in the form of existing internal roads with hardened pavement, arranged sidewalks for pedestrians, railway tracks, buildings, shelters, storage yards, green areas and aboveground development connected with the functioning of the plant. The same development occurs in the set road strips of Nowomiejska Street and Rybaki Górne Street, while in Rybaki Górne Street from Wałowa Street to Podstoczna Street there is an existing roadway pavement and two-sided sidewalks.
The construction of Nowa Wałowa Street is a matter of priority and necessity, so that any investment can start on the former shipyard premises. Creating a transport frame on the former Gdańsk Shipyard premises is a condition for initiating investments to develop these areas, i.e. build residential buildings, offices, architectural details etc.
The planned run of the said Nowa Wałowa Street is as follows: the area at Brama Oliwska was taken to be the beginning. Through the new overpass, which will run over the railway tracks, their neighbouring Jana z Kolna Street and over the areas of the Young City it will reach the designed bridge over Motława river.

According to indicative analyses of the schedule of works and agreements of the city authorities with the main employer who commissioned the study, BPTO, it is planned that the construction of Nowa Wałowa Street will commence already in the second half of 2011 and will take about two years.
The case regarding the creation of the Young City run up against difficulties, which is why previously planned implementations were considerably delayed. Presently, everything is on the right track for the construction to finally start. The only question is to what extent the forecast of a two-year execution is realistic and whether one can expect any effects before 2012.

The Young City creates new, favourable conditions and possibilities for beneficial investments not only for this area but also for the whole Gdańsk.
