Conceptual design of the construction of a tramway line in the Piecki - Migowo district in Gdańsk.
The city district is not located in strict connection with the city centre, whereby travelling between these two points is troublesome, especially in the rush hours.
Creating the possibility of conducting a railway line to the said part of the city is a perfect solution for city conurbation transport.
The run of the route will be continued from the existing terminal in the Siedlce district located closer to the centre, further through Kartuska Street, one of the basic streets of the transport system in the city and the central areas of the target Morena district.
The design allows for not only solving the tramway system but also for upgrading traffic conditions, increasing the flow capacity of intersections, improvement of pedestrian and bicycle traffic safety by building sidewalks and bicycle paths. In order to elaborate these elements it is necessary to reconstruct intersections and pedestrian crossings and to have a newly designed footbridge over Rakoczego Street (to facilitate access to tramway stops for the handicapped it has been assumed that lifts be created) and traffic lights at intersections of more important streets. The length of the line planned in the conceptual design is about 3,2 km.
A lot of work was devoted to analysing variants incorporating the reconstruction of the existing tram terminal in Siedlce and the newly designed one in Morena.
In the place of the existing Siedlce terminal an integrative tramway – bus junction has been planned, allowing for passengers’ safe and easy change of tramway for bus and vice versa.
In one of the variants of the terminal in Morena it was considered that a terminal be constructed of the type “rib”, where it will not be required to interfere in the existing surroundings, as well as the problem of noise caused by trams turning around will disappear. The solution is adjusted to traffic only for bi-sided trams and will be feasible if an appropriate number of bi-way trams is provided. Such an assumption is the most beneficial one in economic and environmental terms, as well as because of the fact that a given terminal is to be only temporary, as it is assumed that later the line will continue further to Nowa Warszawska Street and then it will not be necessary to reconstruct such a tramway system again.
The construction of the tramway line to Morena will in the future also be connected with another investment important for the Tri-City, i.e. the Metropolitan Railway.
